Singapore’s History Alive On Stage

20 September 2011

If you only have time for one show during your visit to Singapore, make it the Singapura Lion City, Singapore’s first homegrown history and cultural musical, produced by Asia Arts & Culture Pte Ltd in partnership with the Yunnan Performing Arts Group of China.

Premiering on 8 October at the newly refurbished Kallang Theatre, the 80-minute musical brings together original songs, dance, drama, acrobatics, colourful costumes and a dazzling LED and laser light spectacle to tell the Singapore story, from its early fishing village days to the modern city-state that it is now.

The $3 million show is performed by a team of 100 professionally trained artistes and stage technical crew from Singapore and China’s Yunnan Provincial Performing Arts Group as well as 2008 Beijing Olympics Yunnan acrobatic troupe.

From the journey of Sang Nila Utama who discovered the island of Temasek which later became known as Singapore, to Singapore’s colonial era during the days of Stamford Raffles, World War II, post-war unrest and finally its independence in 1965, the musical pays homage to the Singapore journey in five acts.

More than just an enriching history lesson, the musical is an entertaining spectacle where stunning LED lighting technology, martial arts, breathtaking acrobatics including death-defying leaps and flamboyant costumes converge to enthrall and delight

The musical ends on a grand note with a 6-metre high Merlion roaring and gushing water from its mouth into a specially constructed pool below the stage.
