Celebrate Singapore at Gardens by the Bay

August is an exciting month to visit Gardens by the Bay as the Gardens has lined up a series exciting events in celebration of Singapore’s bicentennial year and National Day.

Get set for a visual treat of floral artistry and pop culture as Singaporean singer-songwriter Dick Lee lends his creative touch to the Orchid Extravaganza – “Our SingaPop” Edition floral display in Flower Dome.

At the outdoor gardens, Live! Performances: Legends of Singapore brings to life two local fables – The Scourge of the Swordfish and The Friendly Snake – with live music, actors and puppets.

Experience a star-studded National Day weekend on 10 and 11 August, as home-grown artistes including Kit Chan, Dick Lee and Jasmine Sokko perform at The Meadow for the Gardens by the Bay and Mediacorp National Day Concert.

Catch the Garden Rhapsody: Songs of Singapore, a special edition of the popular light and music show at Supertree Grove, which features well-loved songs performed and re-arranged by local musicians including Joanna Dong, Rani Singam, Vocaluptuous and Linying.

This year’s Orchid Extravaganza celebrates Singapore’s pop culture with a creative spin on familiar icons, as seen through the eyes of multi-talented Singaporean singer-songwriter Dick Lee. Melding floral artistry and pop art, the orchid display features landmarks and objects that have become part of local culture. From housing to recreation and food, these have been given a playful makeover under the creative direction of Lee and designer Yang Derong, to reflect Singapore’s unique blend of tradition and modernity. They stand out amidst a colourful landscape of over 15,000 orchids, comprising more than 80 varieties including heritage orchids such as Aranthera Anne Black, Aranda Bertha Braga and Dendrobium Tay Swee Keng.

Pick up a “Orchid Extravaganza” Garden Trail for more information or join the “ASK Me!” tours by the Gardens’ friendly Display Interpreters as they share fascinating facts and anecdotes about the floral display. To participate, gather at the “ASK Me!” poster near the Flower Field. Tours last approximately 15 minutes and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Get Crafty: Orchids
24 August, 2pm – 5pm
The Canopy

Enjoy an afternoon of crafts and fun. As you marvel at the myriad of orchids on display, learn how to fold origami orchids and pick up some fun facts about these popular blooms.

Watch as two legendary fables from Singapore come alive in the heart of the gardens. In The Scourge of the Swordfish, a quiet fishing village comes under attack by ferocious swordfish. Can anyone save the village from these fierce creatures of the sea? In The Friendly Snake, a beautiful friendship is formed between a little girl and a snake, but as their friendship grows, the village’s livestock begin to mysteriously disappear. Is the snake the culprit?

Celebrate Singapore during the National Day long weekend by catching two days of exciting performances by Singapore’s best artistes including Dick Lee, Kit Chan, Jasmine Sokko, Kumar and Aisyah Aziz. To celebrate National Day, Songs of Singapore, a special edition of Garden Rhapsody – the signature light and music show at Gardens by the Bay’s Supertree Grove – will play in the month of August. This commemorative edition features 11 well-loved Singapore songs performed and re-arranged by local musicians including Joanna Dong, Rani Singam, Vocaluptuous and Linying, with creative direction by producer and lighting designer Adrian Tan, and music composer and arranger Bang Wenfu, who have worked together on several editions of Garden Rhapsody through the years.

Orchids belong to one of the most diverse families in the plant kingdom. While they are known and appreciated for their variety of flowers, some have also developed an assortment of smells and strategies to attract pollinators. From the sweet perfume of Phalaenopsis bellina to the intense fragrance of Maxillaria tenuifolia, learn about the different smells that orchids produce and take in the scents at the Fragrance Box in Gardens by the Bay’s latest orchid display in Cloud Forest.

Tours last approximately 15 minutes and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
