Smell The Orchids At Gardens By The Bay
Orchids are not just beautiful, they also emit interesting scents like pepper and bubble gum. Learn more about the flowers’ fragrances and see the beautiful orchid blooms up close at the new Scentsational Orchids display at the Cloud Forest conservatory at Gardens by the Bay.
The interactive orchid display, which runs till 22 September, showcases close to 1,500 orchids of more than 58 species and varieties, categorised into four scented groups – Delicate Floral, Sweet Floral, Spicy Floral and Intense Floral.
Learn about the different smells that orchids produce to attract pollinators and take in the scents at the five Fragrance Boxes. The Fragrance Boxes house orchids with scented notes such as pepper, tom yum and bubble gum. As the orchids in the Fragrance Boxes are refreshed periodically, the scents will vary.
Highlights of the display include Maxillaria tenuifolia, commonly known as the Coconut Orchid as its fragrance resembles that of the tropical fruit; Rhynchonopsis Selina Kuok “Perfume Queen”, which brings to mind a spicy mix of cloves, cinnamon and mint; and Rhyncholaeliocattleya Duh’s Wisdom “Dreamy Star”, which gives off a deep citrusy scent throughout the day and has been awarded the First Class Certificate by the American Orchid Society.
Found in Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, the Maxillaria tenuifolia, commonly known as the Coconut Orchid, has an intense coconut-like fragrance and flowers that are red with brown speckles
